 About Nurse Practitioners

Nurse practitioners provide much of the same care provided by physicians and usually maintain close working relationships with physicians. Kathy works closely with Dr. Janet Lehr of Integrative Physicans, P.C. in Durham, NC.

An NP can serve as a patient’s regular health care provider and see patients of all ages. The core philosophy of the field is individualized care and patient education. NPs make prevention, wellness, and patient education priorities.

NP practice offers a unique healthcare service that focuses not only on diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illnesses, but NPs also integrate health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education to help patients understand their health. With their advanced master's degree, they can prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests, and arrange appropriate consultation with specialists when needed.

Nurse Practitioners focus on promoting health and preventing disease. The high quality of care and cost-effectiveness of care provided by NPs is well-documented. Data shows that patients with an NP as a primary care provider have a lower rate of emergency room admissions and shorter stays in the hospital.

Scope of practice & training

* Diagnosing, treating, evaluating and managing acute and chronic illness and disease (i.e., pneumonia, diabetes, high blood pressure)
* Ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic studies (i.e., lab tests, x-rays, EKGs)
* Prescribing medications
* Providing well-child care, including screening and immunizations
* Providing health maintenance care for adults, including annual physicals
* Performing minor surgeries and procedures (e.g., dermatological biopsies, suturing, casting)
* Collaborating with physicians and other health professionals as needed, including providing referrals
